Recognizing the need for a purpose-built track, the Österreichring was constructed near Spielberg in 1969. This marked the true birth of the Austrian F1 legacy. The track quickly gained popularity thanks to its dramatic elevation changes, high-speed corners, and stunning Styrian countryside backdrop.

The Rise and Fall—and Rise Again—of the Austrian GP

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Austrian GP became a regular fixture on the Formula 1 calendar. Legendary drivers like Niki Lauda—Austria’s own F1 hero—helped boost the race’s profile, turning it into a national event of pride.

However, by 1987, safety concerns led to the race being dropped from the calendar. The high-speed layout of the Austrian F1 track was deemed too dangerous for the ever-evolving standards of modern F1 racing.

The race returned in 1997, this time at a reconfigured and safer version of the circuit, renamed the A1-Ring. It hosted the Austrian Grand Prix until 2003 before once again disappearing from the schedule due to financial and logistical issues.

In the early 2010s, energy drink giant Red Bull—headquartered in Austria—spearheaded the renovation and rebirth of the circuit. Renamed the Red Bull Ring, the updated venue brought F1 back to Spielberg in 2014.

Since its return, the Austrian F1 track has delivered memorable races, including first-time wins and dramatic wet-weather duels. It’s a track that rewards both driver skill and team strategy, with long straights and tight corners that create ample opportunities for overtaking.
